World-renowned vocalist Kevin Mahogany will perform with the NSU Jazz Ensemble. The concert is at the Jazz Lab, which has a history of well-known jazz artists performing.

The Jazz Ensemble has prepared for Mahogany over the past few months. The band holds rehearsal three times a week. Joseph Sullivan, senior saxophonist, said the band has prepared with individual discipline and practice time.

“I always like to think of a very distinct separation between band practice and band rehearsal,” said Sullivan. “Practice is when you’re figuring it out and rehearsal is when you have it figured out and now you’re trying to see out how comes together.”

The band’s preparation and effort will soon be put on display with Mahogany. The band continues to improve with every rehearsal but there is only one way to get better.

“You can practice as much as you want but practicing isn’t how you get better, performing it is how you get better,” said Dr. Gibson, director of jazz studies. “With these instances I like to bring in professionals who have been doing it for a long time, so they can work with the band and work in a professional setting. It gives the students and community a great experience.”

Gibson and the band encourages students and the Tahlequah community to attend to the event to watch their performance and take advantage of the opportunity to watch a world-renowned vocalist perform in Tahlequah.

“We love to perform,” said Christopher Peters, senior drummer. “I love to perform and it’s a way to express ourselves.”

The concert is at 7 p.m. on Oct. 26 at the Jazz Lab on 315 N. Muskogee Ave. The event is free for students and $5 for the public. Tickets can be purchased at the Jazz Lab.
