In the upcoming spring semester, the NSU University and Community Chorus is invited to travel to Ireland and participate in the American Festival of Music. The Tulsa Community Choir is also joining the NSU chorus in this program.

“The NSU chorus, as far as the research I have done and after talking with previous faculty members, has not traveled internationally since 1988,” said Dr. Jeff Wall, music department chair and choral studies director. “It has been a long time since we have done an international tour that showcases our talent, and it is time. It is a neat thing for me, as a professor, to see my students who have not had an international performing experience to have the opportunity to perform overseas, to experience travel and to expand their mindset and horizons. It will be a life changing experience.”

The chorus is given the opportunity to perform together at a few historical locations including Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin and Saint Mary’s Church in Killarney. In addition, they will get to explore many of southern Ireland’s popular tourism sites and landscapes.

Katie McInnis, Sand Springs sophomore, says she has been singing all her life and is excited to venture overseas for the first time.

“The opportunity to sing at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is going to be the coolest experience ever,” said McInnis. “It is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime occasion.”

McInnis also said another reason she is looking forward to visiting Ireland is because she is of Irish decent and has always wanted to see where her family originated from.

Aletha Rodgers, NSU chorus member, also said she is anticipating discovering her Irish heritage through this opportunity.

“I’ve always wanted to go to Ireland and never thought I would be able to,” said Rodgers. “When I heard of this opportunity, I thought I would save money for me and my daughter to go. She was a little hesitant at first, but when I told her about the castles we would see, she was all for it.”

The chorus trip to Ireland is March 18 through March 24. For more information on how to get involved, email Dr. Jeff Wall at For details on how to donate to the music department, visit their website at
