NSU men’s golf comes in sixth at The Mule Invitational

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Northeastern State fired off the second lowest round of the day to climb five spots to finish The Mule Invitational in sixth place on Tuesday.  The RiverHawks shot an even 280 in their final round and scored an 895 against the 18-team field.

Two of NSU's freshman led the squad through their tournament opener with Clovis, Calif. native Tyler Ashman leading the RiverHawks a 213 (72-71-70) and was tied for 14th in his debut.  Tahlequah's Jax Johnson came in three strokes behind (71-76-69) tied for 28th overall.

Hunter Pennington was tied for 35th with a 218 (68-77-73).  Grant Hynes shot a 221 (73-73-75) in his NSU debut to finish in 55th.  Garrett McDaniel rallied in the final round with a team low 68 and matched Hynes on the leaderboard.

Washburn leapt up three spots on Tuesday to overtake Central Missouri's A and B team to claim the overall tournament title with an 845.

Drury's Craig Stefureak took medalist honors in a tiebreaker scoring a 203.

"I'm hanging my hat that we are who we were in the first and third rounds especially with three freshmen playing in their first event," said head coach Scott Varner.  "I am looking at that second round as an anomaly.  Really proud of true freshmen Tyler and Jax, Hunter was solid."

"We rallied by numerous rival teams to go 1-0 on numerous quality teams in our region.  Most of that was achieved in that final round rally. This should give us a great shot of confidence going into our home tourney next week."

Northeastern State will host its 20th Men's Classic on Monday and Tuesday at the Muskogee Country Club.
