Opening Tip 
  • Northeastern State opens its second season under the leadership of head coach Mark Downey with an exhibition at Tulsa.
  • This will be the first exhibition game for Downey as head coach for the RiverHawks.
  • Northeastern State will stay close to home with its first six games being in Oklahoma.
  • Downey has not faced Tulsa in his head coaching career.
  • Downey does have two wins over NCAA Division I programs as head coach, defeating NCAA Division I opponents Abilene Christian and The Citadel.  
RiverHawks vs. Hurricane Series
  • Northeastern State will face Tulsa for the second time in exhibition play.
  • The RiverHawks last visit came on Nov. 7, 2016, Northeastern State would fall 84-52.
  • Tanner Mouse started and led the RiverHawks with 14 points.  
  • Trent Cantrell and Gordon Hill both came off the bench in the last meeting at TU.
  • Northeastern State last won during the 1941-42 season, 26-20.
About the Hurricane
  • The 108th season for the men's basketball program.
  • Sterling Taplin was named preseason second-team all-conference in a vote by the American Athletic Conference head coaches.
  • Tulsa was picked to finish ninth in the American Athletic Conference after going 19-12 one season ago.
  • Winners of their last six at home.
NSU in Exhibitions 
  • The RiverHawks did not play an exhibition contest last season.
  • Northeastern State nearly knocked off Stephen F. Austin, 75-70 in their last exhibition go-around on Nov. 18, 2016.
  • Prior to the 2016-17 season, Northeastern State didn't play an exhibition for three years.
  • Oklahoma's Lon Kruger's debut with the Sooners was an exhibition against the RiverHawks in 2011.
Looking Back
  • Northeastern State fell 88-86 to Washburn in overtime in Tahlequah to end the regular season.
  • Due to the loss, the RiverHawks came out on the short end of a three-way tiebreaker to make the MIAA Tournament opening round.
  • Trent Cantrell averaged 11.8 points per game in the final nine contests of the season.
  • Tanner Mouse started the final four games of the season and was averaging 12.8 points per game in his last six outings.
  • This was the first season for head coach Mark Downey at NSU.
Ignoring the Polls
Out of 14 teams, Northeastern State was picked 12th in the MIAA Preseason Coaches poll and 14th the media.

Senior transfer D'Angelo Jackson starts the season with 1,203 career points in-between stops at Eastern Illinois and Highland CC.  Jackson has a career average at over 15 points per game and was selected as a NJCAA All-American.

An older group
Northeastern State has one freshman on its roster this season with nine juniors, and four seniors.

Former Rangers
Jahmel BodrickMichael Bowers, and Caleb Smith all come to Northeastern State from Ranger College (Texas) and played for Former Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Kentucky basketball coach Billy Gillispie.
