NSU men drop MIAA opener at Pitt State, 86-78

12/6/18

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Free-throws proved to be the difference in an 86-78 loss for the RiverHawks in their MIAA opener at Pittsburg State.   The Gorillas were sent to line 30 times, ten more than Northeastern State, and outscored them by nine at John Lance Arena.

It also did not help the RiverHawks cause that Gorillas' first five buckets in the second half were all from long range.  A six-point halftime deficit quickly grew to 15 by the first official stoppage, a hole Northeastern State could not claw themselves out of.

Northeastern State did narrow the Gorilla gap and closed within eight with eight minutes left in the contest.  The Gorillas responded back with a three-pointer to end the NSU threat.

Pitt State launched nine made treys in the final 20 minutes and shot 59.3-percent to go to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA.

Northeastern State had all five of its starters in double-figures to slip to 5-3 (0-1 MIAA) in their first out-of-state contest of the year.

Caleb Smith left a point short of his season high with 18, Jahmel Bodrick in his third start of the year scored 15, and Tanner Mouse added 13.  Aaron Givens came up with 12 points and D'Angelo Jackson dropped ten on the Gorillas.

The RiverHawks finished the evening shooting 49.1-percent, better than PSU who was 43.9-percent.

Rebounds were even for both squads with 34.
