Published 4/21/18

TAHLEQUAH, OKLA. ---- Northeastern State’s Oscar Resendez Jr. collected his fourth home run of the year and doubled home the winning run as the RiverHawks picked up the 5-4 over Nebraska-Kearney in a 10 inning affair at Rousey Field here Saturday.

NSU improves to 24-18 on the year and 15-14 in MIAA play.

The RiverHawks and Loper’s followed the same script in the finale as in game one of the series.  After two scoreless innings, Northeastern State put the first run on the board in the third.

Michael Rhea and Zane Takhar led off the third frame with back to back singles and Rhea scored on an Erick Espinosa single for a 1-0 NSU lead.

Rhea and Takhar teamed up again in the fourth inning, Rhea doubled and Takhar’s single pushed the NSU lead to 2-0.  The lead would grow to 3-0 in the fifth inning on a Blake Vandergrift sacrifice fly. Resendez Jr.’s solo homer in the sixth inning gave the RiverHawks a 4-0 lead after six innings of play.

NSU starter James Cowell gave up just five hits through six innings but ran into trouble in the seventh.  The Loper’s used two doubles, and a wild pitch to plate three in the frame and end Cowell’s.  Lane Rice came on to record the final out in the seventh.

Rice retired the first two batters in the eighth inning. Back to back singles and an NSU error allowed the Loper’s to tie the game at 4-4.

Trevor Nance came on in relief in the ninth inning, holding the Loper’s scoreless in the ninth and 10th innings.  For Northeastern State in the 10th, a two-out walk by Takhar set up Resendez Jr.’s walk-off double to plate the winning run and the 5-4 victory.

Nance picked up the victory improving his record to 6-1.

The RiverHawks will hit the road for four straight starting with a trip to Edmond to take on Central Oklahoma on April 25th.  Then head to Emporia State for a weekend series.
