NSU’s late run comes short in MIAA women’s basketball opener

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Back-to-back three pointers by Pittsburg State in the final two minutes deflated a late RiverHawks' rally on Wednesday evening inside John Lance Arena.  Northeastern State pulled within six points during that late run but fell to the Gorillas 75-65 in both teams' MIAA opener.
Bailee Eldred recorded her fifth career double-double behind a team high 16 points and season high 12 rebounds.  Cenia Hayes hit double-figures for the fourth time this year with 14 points and eight rebounds.  Joi Bertrand left PSU as the RiverHawks' third leading scorer with ten points.
Wednesday's loss will drop the RiverHawks to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in MIAA play; Pittsburg State goes to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
Trailing by a dozen with six minutes left to play, the RiverHawks used an 8-2 to claw within a pair of possessions of the Gorillas.  After trading buckets, Pittsburg State's Meghan Maher halted the RiverHawks with back-to-back treys.  Northeastern State trailed by double-digits the rest of the way.
The RiverHawks finished the evening shooting 22-for-70 from the field and were 3-for-19 at the arc.  Maddie Morrow had a pair of treys in the fourth and finished with eight points overall.
Pittsburg State held a small 50-to-47 rebounding edge and were led by Athena Alvarado who had 19 points and 14 rebounds.
9 – Bertrand had two blocks at Pitt and has recorded at-least one in the last nine contests.
14 – In points off turnovers, Northeastern State led 14-to-8.
20 – Cailyn Long now needs just 20 points to reach 1,000 in her career at Northeastern State; the senior had seven points against the Gorillas.
27 – Eldred went 6-for-6 at the free-throw line and has now converted 27 straight.
Northeastern State remains on the road and faces Missouri Southern this Saturday in Joplin for a 1:30 p.m. tip.
