Both NSU men’s and women’s basketball teams confidently stepped into preseason. Half of the women’s team is new this year. There were six new players recruited, including two freshmen and four transfers. There are also two new coaches and one returning graduate assistant coach. On the men’s side, there were 13 new players brought in, some of them high school transfers, some from junior colleges and some 4-year transfers. The head coach and assistant coach are also new.

NSU men’s basketball searches for positive consistency as the RiverHawks have struggled in past years to find wins. The RiverHawks went 5-23 during the 2016-17 season with a 4-15 record in the MIAA. NSU will look to change their fortunes as Mark Downey takes over as head coach. NSU hired Downey to turn the program around. He will work in collaboration with his assistant coach, Nathan Kennedy, and graduate assistant coach, Chaun Davis.

NSU analyzes move to the MIAA

NSU announced the move for athletics from the Lone Star Conference to the MIAA Conference in 2010. The official move was made in 2012 with rival in-state school University of Central Oklahoma also making the jump to the MIAA with NSU.
