INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.  – After a two-year absence, Northeastern State is returning to the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament as the Central Region's top-seed the National Collegiate Athletics Association announced on its Selection Show Monday evening.
This is the third time in a row that the RiverHawks have been the Central Region's top-ranked team, and were hosts in the 2012 and 2014.  However, with the bracket rotation this season the RiverHawks will face Fort Hays State at a site to be determined on Nov. 16 or 17 in the NCAA Super Region 3 Championship.   The top-remaining team who submitted a hosting bid from Midwest Region will host NSU and the Tigers in the Round of 16.  Presently, Ohio Valley (Vienna, W.Va.) and Rockhurst (Kansas City, Mo.) are the top-two seeds out of the Midwest Region.
Northeastern State and Fort Hays State split the home-and-home MIAA series with the RiverHawks taking the last contest, 3-1, on Oct. 15 in Tahlequah.   The last time NSU was in the NCAA Tournament, they faced Fort Hays State in 2014, and fell in a 1-1 draw that resulted in a 3-2 shootout win for the Tigers.
The winner of the Super Region 3 Championship between the Central and Midwest Regions will advance to the semifinals which will be hosted at Children's Mercy Victory Field at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Mo.
