NSU holds on for win over Northwest Missouri

Published 3/10/18

MARYVILLE, Mo. –  Northeastern State's Nolan Sturgeon stared down the tying run 90 feet away from home plate twice and recorded the final four outs to give the RiverHawks a 3-2 win at Northwest Missouri.  Saturday's win prevented a series sweep of Northeastern State (11-9, 3-6 MIAA) by the Bearcats (10-9, 7-2 MIAA).
The save by Sturgeon was his second of the season with Jonathan Smithey (1-0) getting the win in five innings of work.
The RiverHawks were out-hit 12-to-4 by the Bearcats but NSU did enough damage scratch out a run in-between the third and fifth inning.
Jaxon Phipps scored Northeastern State's first run of the day on a single center in the third frame.  An error on a fly ball in the fourth made the score 2-0 in-favor of NSU in the fourth, and Reid Fehr hit the team's lone extra base hit in the fifth for their third run.
Northwest Missouri scored both of their runs in the sixth with the first coming on a sac fly and the later was off a single up the middle.
Zane Takhar singled in the eighth inning to bring his hitting streak up to 11 games.
Northeastern State will host Rogers State on Tuesday in non-conference play at 2 p.m.
