Tahlequah Public Schools is serving around 117 students a week through the Tahlequah Backpack Program. The program is set up for lower-income families to receive food for their children to take home. Every child in the program gets to take home a bag of food with water, milk, juice, vegetables, fruit and many other items.

“Packing is on a volunteer basis,” said April Bardell, Tahlequah Backpack Program, distribution manager. “We schedule groups from the high school and middle school, as well as community members.”

The program is funded through community partners and families. The backpack program also received plastic bags to send food home to students from Reasor’s as a donation. Some of the food is donated, but mostly the food is purchased through the Oklahoma Food Bank.
