On March 21 local law enforcement and community members gathered at the Elks Lodge in Tahlequah to celebrate the hard work of a few outstanding officers. One officer from each law enforcement branch in the area is chosen as their Outstanding Officer of the Year, based on their hard work and dedication to making the community a safer place.

One law enforcement branch present was the NSU University Police Department. Troy Shatwell was honored as the Outstanding Officer of the Year. Shatwell is an alumnus of NSU and graduated three years ago with a criminal justice major. He was chosen for his diligence and commitment to serving the NSU community, as well as taking on over 400 hours of overtime over the course of the last year.

Other branches present at the event were the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the Tahlequah Police Department and the Cherokee County Police.

Outstanding Officer of the Year recipients:

·      NSU University Police Department: Troy Shatwell

·      Oklahoma Highway Patrol: Matthew Williams

·      Tahlequah Police Department: Chase Reed, with honorable mentions for Brandon Vick and Josh Girdner

·      Cherokee County Police: David Haddock
