Rowdy’s Resource Room has undergone a big change this semester, but its goal has remained the same. It hopes to make a difference in people’s lives through generosity and compassion. The return of Food Basket Frenzy signifies Thanksgiving and the near end of the fall semester.

Food Basket Frenzy is a Thanksgiving community service project that has been recurring for a few years. The project aims to fill baskets with food items traditionally seen at a Thanksgiving dinner and deliver them to people in need. Items usually included are ham, mashed potatoes, canned corn, green beans, cranberry sauce, stuffing, gravy and cornbread.

“I want every family to take part in one of the biggest holidays of the year,” said Jorge Morales, Rowdy’s Resource Room marketing chair. “I believe that this time of year is especially hard on families who aren't able to celebrate in a traditional manner due to the situation they are facing. The Rowdy’s Resource Room committee has a goal of providing a food basket to at least 30 families. This is very exciting, and I am even more excited to see how the NSU community helps through donations of needed items and sponsorships of baskets. If you are looking to help out, there are various ways you can do so.”

Donating needed items to Rowdy’s Resource Room in Leoser is one way to help the project. The group also supports monetary donations. Any amount is encouraged, but baskets have a value of $30. Lastly, people can help construct and distribute the baskets near Thanksgiving Day. Rowdy’s Resource Room also encourages people to sign up to receive baskets if they think they need it.

“In all, we started preparing for Food Basket Frenzy Oct. 1,” said Skye Boyce, Rowdy’s Resource Room committee member. “It’s important to show that we care and haven't forgotten about the people in the community. I believe that Food Basket Frenzy shows people in our community that we care, we know and we love them. Food Basket Frenzy is for everybody, and they are more than welcome to fill out a form and receive a basket. I’m looking forward to seeing the joy on their faces with them knowing that they don't have to worry about not having Thanksgiving.”

The baskets are made to serve an average household of four. When delivering the baskets, volunteers often take them directly to the doors of those requesting them. This allows volunteers to experience the emotions of what giving means to those who requested the baskets. Rowdy’s Resource Room has more people signed up to receive the baskets this year than in previous years, and the team is excited to see the difference they can make.

“Last year, I and the previous director personally delivered around 12 baskets to community members at their home,” said Pate Thomas, Rowdy’s Resource Room director. “The look on their faces as they opened their doors to us standing there with the food was all worth it. The Food Basket Frenzy is our way of giving back and making sure that those less fortunate are able to experience the holidays the same as everyone else. I am truly excited to provide more baskets than last year and to reach as many students and community members as possible. We have also received a ton of support here on campus from students, faculty and staff. So many people have reached out to me asking about donating or helping in whatever way they can.”

Rowdy’s Resource Room is still taking donations for the baskets. Basket construction is on Nov. 17 and distribution is Nov. 20 – 21.
