During the fall semester Phi Sigma Kappa invites the sororities on campus to come out and participate in their annual Mud on the Tires philanthropy event. The events this year consisted of dodgeball, tug-of-war, a relay race, a slip-n-slide and a mud pie eating contest, all of which were done is a large mud pit. In addition, there was also be a donation award presented to the sorority chapter who donated the most to the event.

“Mud on the Tires is one of my absolutely favorite events to participate in,” said Grace Hand, Tulsa junior. “I have participated in Mud on the Tires for the last couple of years, and it is always awesome to participate in an event like Mud on the Tires where I get to have fun, as well as participate in giving back”

The men dress up and get painted up to cheer on and coach the sorority women who participate in the events. The men spend time before the events with the women of each sorority making a game plan and painting T-shirts and other festive items for the event.

“It’s always fun painting up our coaches,” said Hand. “We normally paint them all black and white to replicate pandas, which is our sorority's mascot. The guys get so into it that it really makes it worthwhile.”

All the proceeds for Mud on the Tires goes to Special Olympics.

“Last year we were able to raise around $300 for the Special Olympics,” said John Webster, Phi Sigma Kappa philanthropy chairman. “The events and playing in the mud are a lot of fun, but the main thing we remind everyone participating is that the final goal is to raise money for the Special Olympics.”

Special Olympics is a training and competition program that goes year-round for both children and adults with intellectual disabilities from all across Oklahoma. Phi Sigma Kappa works all year to raise money for the Special Olympics and to ensure they are giving back as much as possible.

“This year will be our 11th annual Mud on the Tires,” said Josh Gleeves, Phi Sigma Kappa member. “We are excited to see this event continue on for 11 years. Also, for it to be successful all 11 years is awesome.”

Mud on the Tires took place Oct. 11 at the Phi Sigma Kappa land across from the intramural field.
