After years of service to the Tahlequah and NSU community, Felts Shoes continues to give back. Clay Felts and his wife Kay Felts founded Felts Family Shoe Store in 1939. They opened the store on Valentine’s Day of that year and have since become known for their family-owned business both locally and statewide.

Though both Clay and Kay Felts have since died, their legacy lives on through their sons who co-own and run the store.

Bryce Felts, co-owner of Felts Shoes, said the Felts family has been serving NSU for many years.

“Clay and I spent one day a week, year in and year out, at NSU with the Kiwanis Club,” said Felts. “When you consider it, we have actually been on campus once a week for over 70 years, in addition to both of us being guest speakers at NSU for a number of entrepreneurial programs.”

The Felts family has received recognition and various awards in the past years including the Significant Investment in People’s award from the Sequoyah Club in 1979, the Effective Support award from the NSU Education Foundation in 1982, recognition on the Wall of Honor at Gable Field (currently known as Doc Wadley Stadium), the Family of the Year award from NSU in 2008 and NSU’s President’s Circle in 2015.

Four generations of the Felts family have attended NSU. Additionally, the family provides a scholarship in honor of Kay Felts. The scholarship is awarded each year to a student, usually a female, pursing a degree in business.

Doyle Felts, Felts Shoes co-owner, said he has fond memories of his father supporting NSU athletics.

“Dad always attended the NSU football games,” said Felts. “He always wore his beat-up, old hat, and would support them in every game.”

Felts said after his father died, his mother continued to celebrate her husband’s support for the NSU basketball team. He said she treated the entire basketball team and coaches to dinner at the end of each season for a few consecutive years, thanking them for their support in return.

Felts Shoes continues to give back to the community. In recent years, they have sponsored NSU and Tahlequah High School through advertisement and various types of monetary donations.

Drew Felts, manager of Felts Shoes, said one thing that makes his family’s store stand out from other businesses is not just the number of years Felts Shoes has been serving their customers, but the quality of service their customers receive.

“Our customer service has always been what keeps us going strong,” said Felts. “It is a unique service that I personally think you don’t get anywhere else.”

Bryce Felts said he also agrees that Felts Shoes’ customer service has always been of top quality. He said when visiting other places he doesn’t receive one-on-one attention from workers. Since day one of working in the store, his father taught him and his brothers the importance of taking care of each customer the same as they would treat a friend. He also taught them the importance of remaining a full-service shoe store. He said it sets Felts Shoes far apart from their competition.

2018 marks nearly 80 years of service Felts Shoes has contributed to the Tahlequah community. For more information, call Felts Shoes at 918-456-3741.
