Trying to stay healthy and fit in college can be challenging to many students. Common excuses for why people do not work out include: not enough time, not enough money for a gym membership and not knowing what to do on the machines at the gym. The NSU RiverHawk Wellness Center offers a different approach to staying fit by offering a variety of fitness classes completely free for students.

The fitness classes are offered throughout the day, and the majority of them last an hour. However, this year there are also express fitness classes. The express classes are only 30 minutes long and are offered during lunchtime, making it easy for busy students to fit in some exercise time.

The center also offers a large variety of classes including: water, resistance, cardio, Zumba/dance, yoga/stretch and specialty classes. The Zumba classes are a favorite among many students.

This year I decided I wanted to Zumba, which I had never done before,” said Shelby Smith, Tulsa senior. “It sounded fun, and with it being free, I was able to test it out and see how I like it. Turns out I love it! It's fun to forget about everything going on and make yourself better simultaneously. There's a variety of people in there, and we have a great time without any judgement.”

These classes are also an opportunity to connect with other students who have similar interests.

In addition to the fitness classes, the FIT has a cardio room, a weight room, a pool, an indoor walking track and two basketball courts. All of the equipment was purchased brand new for the new facility.

Memberships are free to full-time NSU students and full-time faculty and staff. Paid memberships are available for part-time students, community members and part-time faculty and staff for rates ranging between $12.50 and $40 per month. Daily, weekly and biweekly guest passes are also available for purchase.

The FIT also offers a personalized exercise assessment for $40. Personal training sessions are offered for students and nonstudents ranging from $10-$20 with personal and group training options available.

The FIT is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, and 12-6 p.m., Sunday.

The pool is open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
