Big Event committee prepares for "Big Week"

Since 2006, the NSU family has served the Tahlequah and Broken Arrow community with the largest day of service, The Big Event.

“Service has been something ingrained into my values,” said Brooke Bergman, Big Event co-director. “I have had a blast working with our awesome committee to work to provide a fun day for students to serve. This has been my favorite experience in college.”

RiverHawks realize the true importance of giving back to the community. The Big Event is a one-day service event that allows students, faculty and staff to show their appreciation to members and businesses of the Tahlequah and Broken Arrow community for their continued support and encouragement.

Our biggest goal this year is to recruit 800 to sign up to volunteer,” said Seth Clark, Big Event co-director. “That would be a record breaking number, and we would be able to serve so many more members of the Tahlequah community.”

To reach this goal, the Big Event committee has prepared “Big Week”, a week to recruit more students to participate in giving back to the community.

“ ‘Big Week’ is a tradition that we started last year,” said Clark. “It is the final week for students to sign up to volunteer, so we use it as a last final push to get students interested.”

The week is packed full of exciting activities for NSU students toparticipate in. This year, the committee added a volleyball tournament to help raise money for Big Event. Sign-ups for the tournament include a $5 fee for each student, and each team must have a minimum of six students. The fee and registration must be turned in to the Student Engagement office by Tuesday, March 6.

“There will be tabling, giveaways and Big Event things scattered all over campus to get people excited about signing up,” said Katie Fletcher, Big Event’s campus community subcommittee member.

The committee has worked diligently to promote Big Event in every way possible and each member is driven to reach the goal of 800 RiverHawk volunteers.

“Being a part of Big Event means a lot to me,” said Fletcher. “I get to help create the opportunity for students to giveback to a community that has given so much of itself to our college and to us as individuals.”

Big Week is scheduled March 5-9, and the deadline to sign up for Big Event is March 16.
