NSU Speech and Debate Team sweeps competition at Cameron

Published 12/7/17

The Northeastern State University competitive speech and debate team participated in the 2017 Christmas Classic at Cameron University in Lawton, OK on December 1 through Dec 3.

While the tournament hosted 19 universities, NSU was still able to bring home three awards from the first day of competition, hosted by Cameron University. Gemini Creason, a senior from Tahlequah, won second in the events of Prose and After Dinner Speaking while Earin Murrell, a freshman from Tulsa, placed fifth in Poetry.

The NSU team won nine awards the second day of the tournament, which was hosted by West Texas A&M. Creason placed first in Communication Analysis and Informative Speaking; second in After Dinner Speaking;  6th in Impromptu Speaking; and she also brought home the first place Pentathlon  award. Murrell won 3rd in Poetry and Top Novice in Poetry; while Avila brought home a second in Prose and Top Novice in Prose.

“It is always a great experience when every member of your team gets to bring home multiple awards,” stated Tricia Diaville, NSU Speech and Debate Coach. “We just want to keep this momentum going into the New Year.”

NSU speech and debate also won 3rd place in Individual Events Sweeps, meaning that they were one of the top three highest-ranking schools that won the most awards in IE’s. They were also one of the top Oklahoma schools overall at the tournament.

The next round of tournaments begin next semester in January 2018.
